Winston Reid departs West Ham United by mutual consent

Winston Reid has thanked West Ham United and its supporters, after the long-serving defender today brought to an end his 11-year career with the Hammers.

The Club can confirm it has reached an agreement with Reid for the New Zealand international to depart and allow him to pursue first-team football elsewhere.

The 33-year-old has been a loyal and dependable servant ever since signing in the summer of 2010, and paid tribute to his time in East London and his relationship with the Claret and Blue Army upon his departure.

“I have a lot of respect for the Club, and we’ve found an agreement that’s good for everyone involved,” Reid told West Ham TV. “I came here in 2010 and have just enjoyed so much of playing for the Club. It’s been a special time.

“I’ve always felt that the fans have supported me, and I’ve always tried to give my best for them. At the end of the day, when you’re a footballer, that’s what you enjoy the most, going out there and playing in front of a lot of fans.

“Over the years, that’s also what I’ve enjoyed the most: playing for your fans, for your teammates, for your coaches and for your family.

“I just want to say ‘thank you’ and I wish you all the best for the future.”

Everyone at West Ham United would like to express their gratitude for the commitment, dedication and loyalty which Reid has shown the Club since 2010, and wish him and his family all the very best for the future.

Winner against Millwall
Last ever goal at UP

People who have done far less are far more celebrated.

And at his best, a very good centre back who had others looking at him.

Re: Winston Reid released
Sad that his career was decimated by that injury at Swansea but hopefully he can still do something at Championship level as he did at Brentford.
We DID offer him a contract of excessive length though and paid the price. Literally

Of course will always be remembered for the last Upton Park goal and the one against Millwall

Glad to see (so far) a lot of love for him.

As has been said, a few MAMOUTH times he popped up for us.

I'll follow his career whoever he ends up with.

Re: Winston Reid released
I suppose the long term injury has robbed him of a testimonial, unless clubs have stopped doing it? No real need as a pay off nowadays I guess, but was good seeing players get celebrated. Especially as it’s rare theses days to stay so long at one club.

Good to see he waived the rest of his contract.

Wouldn’t mind seeing him re-sign on a pay-as-you-play deal now.

I can't see why anyone would or could slag him off. Was a massive part of us returning to the premier league after his first full season with us. Was brilliant for us. Shame it ended the way it did.

Good luck Winston ⚒️

Re: Winston Reid released
Think he was one of Allardyce’s biggest successes while here. He turned Reid into a really good centre back. Was brilliant first few seasons when we came up.

You do make me laugh.

You’re a div, but at least sometimes you’re an amusing div.

Loyalty?

Not really tested at 70k a week was it?

Ah, I said that already. Dementia.

Re: Winston Reid released
I don't think he waived his contract. Says they came to an agreement.

It was a long contract but no one would complain if we offered Rice the same. He was highly thought of at the time. The injury is one of those things.

Wish him all the best. Some very fond memories of him.

It’s a shame about the last 4 years. Typical West Ham luck.

Thanks for the memories, Winston.

Re: Winston Reid released
I think he had two years left. We probably paid him half.

Jose+ 10:30 Tue Sep 21
Re: Winston Reid released
I suspect we paid a substantial portion of the remaining contract as a lump sum so he could fuck off from the training ground. At least we save a bit of cash in HR.

Solid player for us who had some good seasons with us and turned out to be a very good signing.
